Mangosteen Pericarp Benefits and Risks
Credit goes to Rohmadi, SST. 3 (Employee of SMKPP N Banjaerbaru, Indonesia) who publishes in 2017 the benefits of mangosteen peel and he mentions about stabilising endocrine (even though no more details revealed and no risks mentioned).
Another credit goes to Ika Maryamah 4, who at the time she publishes her study in 2012 she was a high school student in Kebumen, Indonesia. She does a comprehensive study report of mangosteen as a whole from the history, biology classification, how to plant, how to process the mangosteen rind tea, and of course the benefits of mangosteen peel. Although the risks are not explicitly being mentioned in her study but it really is impressive work as a high school student she summarises them from so many sources online and offline.
The mangosteen plant overall benefits and risks (implicit) as in Ika’s study report4:
- Anti cancer food (Suksamrarn et.al., 2006)
- Weight-loss supplement
- Colouring agent
- Mangosteen rind boiled water used as anti diarrhea
- Unripe mangosteen fruit shows spermicide and sperniostatik* effect

- Biochemical pharmacology study shows mangostin competitively block not only Histamine H receptor, soft tissue contraction mediator but also epiramin** that builds H1 receptor, in the soft tissue cell as a whole. Mangostin is a new type of Histamine.
- When mangosteen young leaves given to pregnant mice with dosage of 500, 1000, 1500 mg/kg body weight, results show a weight loss in fetus, change in the fetus liver as in hepatic cell necrosis, but there is no change in development and abortion. Mangosteen rind extract with various dosage reduces spermatids cell counts, increases abnormal spermatozoa, and slows mice spermatozoa motility.
- In the community, mangosteen fruits used as anti diarrhea, tonsil anti inflammatory, to treat leukorrhea, hemorrhoids, wound; also used as sputum (phlegm) thinner and toothache treatment. Mangsoteen peel used as medicine for ulcer, dysentery, muscle pain, constipation. Mangosteen stem skin used for stomach pain. Mangosteen root used to treat irregular menstrual cycle. (Tanaman Obat Indonesia: 2005)
- Mangosteen tree stem used as house building materials, firewood or craft.
- Mangosteen rind is rich in Tannin, often extracted and sometimes used as indigestion treatment and as cream.
- Mangosteen pericarp is effective to reduce uric acid in our body useful for rheumatic or gout treatment.
- Mangosteen tree has strong root and good to restore critical landscapes.
- Mangosteen fruit contains ingredients for anti-fatigue (energise the body), analgesic (prevent nerves pain), anti depressant (rejuvenation), anxiolytic (reduce anxiety), antiviral (treat viral infection), antihyperlipidemic (reduce cholesterol) , hypoglycemic (lower blood sugar), antiarthritic (relieve joint stiffness), anti periodontitis (prevent gum disease), anti calculus (prevent dental plague and tartar build-up), anti pyretic (reduce fever) and anti glaucoma (alleviate glaucoma).
